Chapter Seven

Jenny insisted on staying for a double shift, and Lorelei couldn’t find it in her to object. She got the feeling that her employee didn’t want to be alone just then, she couldn’t in good conscience refuse her the sanctuary of the coffee shop. Besides, it felt nice and rather festive to work with her and Mary. They rarely all worked together. Jenny and Mary were her two most experienced employees, so they usually worked opposite shifts, making sure that everything got done correctly when Lorelei wasn’t there. Henry didn’t need much supervision, though he did have a tendency to gossip, but Norah was still finishing up her training.

They closed early enough on Sundays that while the sun had started to dip down toward the horizon, it wasn’t yet dark out by closing time. It was a nice change, and the soft, golden glow outside gave Lorelei a boost of energy. The three of them locked the doors, then turned the radio up louder and began cleaning the coffee shop to the tunes of old Christmas songs.

“More holidays need music,” Jenny said as she mopped. “Just think about it; we could have Thanksgiving music, Easter music, Fourth of July music… It would be great.”

“Now that you said it, it is a bit strange that the only holiday that really has its own music is Christmas. Well, I suppose Halloween has some too. I’m sure some of the other winter holidays do as well, but Christmas is the only one I’ve ever celebrated.,” Mary said. She was counting out the register while Lorelei cleaned the windows. The cold outside made the window cleaning solution leave streaks on the glass no matter what she did.

“A bit off topic, but maybe we should do a Christmas in July week this year,” Lorelei said. “We can bring out the decorations, play some Christmas music, offer some festive coffee, and just generally boost people’s spirits. It might be fun.”

“I’d love that,” Jenny said. “You should get Norah involved too; she loves decorating. She would probably have some good ideas.”

“She mentioned how much she likes decorating after we decorated the coffee shop this year,” Lorelei said. “I felt bad for doing it without her; if I’d known how much she enjoyed it, I would have waited for a day she was working too.”

She reached the edge of the window and stepped back, frowning at it. The smudges from various fingers and Latte’s nose were gone, but there were still streaks if she looked closely enough. She would just have to deal with it for now; the window cleaning solution just didn’t want to dry quickly enough when the glass was so cold.

She bent down and picked Latte’s bed up off the floor, placing it back in its normal spot on the windowsill, then looked around for her cat. She usually put Latte in her cat carrier when they started cleaning, but they hadn’t bothered today; none of them were in a huge hurry, and they were just having fun with it .
